Reconstruction of the plantar area with extended defect: a clinical case

Abstract

Reconstruction of extensive skin defects in the plantar region of the foot continues to be a challenging task for surgeons. This article describes the case of treatment and rehabilitation of a 50-year-old patient who sustained an extensive injury in the plantar area after being hit by a loading truck. After performing a neurectomy and measure the size of the defect, the wound was covered by transplanting a medial plantar flap from the contralateral foot to the weightbearing area of the heel, and the remaining non-weight-bearing area was covered with autodermal grafts. The medial plantar flap was harvested with branches of the medial plantar nerve for simultaneous reinnervation of the flap.
