Using bioresorbable and autologous bone plates to correct quadrangular cartilage deformities in rhinoplasty

Abstract

Purpose of the study: to compare the results of using bioresorbable polylactic acid plates (100% PDLLA, Resorb-X) and autologous bone plates from the perpendicular plate of the ethmoid bone to correct deformities of the quadrangular cartilage of the nasal septum.

Material and methods. A prospective comparative study was conducted, including 51 patients who underwent rhinoplasty between 2022 and 2025. In the first group (n = 23), a perforated 30 × 30 × 0.2 mm plate made of 100% PDLLA was used, in the second group (n = 28) – a perforated autologous bone plate from the perpendicular plate of the ethmoid bone, thinned with a diamond bur. Subjective assessment of the results was performed using the standardized SCHNOS questionnaire for the obstruction (SCHNOS-O) and esthetics (SCHNOS-C) domains preoperatively and 6 months postoperatively. Objective assessment was performed using anterior active rhinomanometry.

Results. No statistically significant differences were found between the groups in the SCHNOS-O and SCHNOS-C scores either preoperatively or 6 months postoperatively. A tendency toward slightly higher airflow rates was noted in the polymer plate group, presumably due to the thinner implant thickness compared to the bone plate.

Conclusion. A bioresorbable polylactic acid plate may be alternative to autologous bone plate from the perpendicular plate of the ethmoid bone in the correction of quadrangular cartilage deformities during primary bonepreserving rhinoplasty.
